The brand name, “Niconeru,” is a combination of the Japanese word for kneading clay, koneru, and the word nico-nico, which means “smile.” At our workshop in Tokyo, highly skilled designers handcraft these colorful accessories one by one using versatile polymer clay, which can be molded into just about any shape or design.
The Possibilities of Polymer Clay Meet Distinctive Japanese Designs
Etsuko Akita, our founder and chief designer, has been working with clay all her life, as her mother is also a clay artist.
Recognizing the potential of polymer clay as a material for jewelry, she began making accessories in order to share her love of clay with others, which ultimately led her to found "Niconeru' as a jewelry Land in 2011.
Original design techniques
The material for our clayjewels, polymer clay (PVC resin clay), gives complete freedom to produce designs of various colors and shapes, as well as colorful, lightweight, and fun-to-wear accessories. Different colors of polymer clay (PVC resin clay) can be combined to create various shades and patterns. Our clayjewels are created similarly to kintaroame, a Japanese sweet made by rolling different colored sheets of candy into a tube so that the same design appears in each cross-sectional slice.
Because each item is individually designed, each is completely unique.

As polymer clay allows for great design freedom in terms of color and shape, we use it to craft all sorts of accessories, from earrings and necklaces to kimono sash clips.
